I have a 20% disability and married I keep going back to the v.a for my increase in my compensation because I have had bad knees in the military with a hearing loss I were hearing aids my records in the military shows that I had foot problems I had both feet operator's on had a knee replacement surgery on my left knee but they keep turning me down on an increase for my compensation I have doctors records and my military records what am I to do

      • If you believe that you have a potential claim for VA Disability, I recommend that you go to https://eauth.va.gov/ebenef... and setup an account, then file a claim.

Once a claim has been started, you have 1 year to complete the claim and the back pay starting date is the 1st of the following month after the initial online filing process

Next step, go to a VSO (Veteran Service Officer) through the VFW, American Legion, AmVets, DAV, Vietnam Veterans of America.

The VSO will discuss the claim info and give you the proper forms to have your VA Doctor or Private Physician to fill out.

Make a doctors appointment and have the papers filled out.

Return them to your VSO and he will fax them to the VA Claims Center for your Region.

I personally made copies of all my doctors forms to keep just in case someone later said that they did not receive it. I also kept all VA correspondence and my C&P Exam Letters.

I initially spent 150 to 200 hours researching different court appeals of the VA Claims.

Do not do as I did, I waited 9 years after being diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus.

I cheated myself out of a lot of money but I felt unworthy, I had all my arms and legs, plus there was certain things that I did not want to talk about for the PTSD.

I am also a Purple Heart recipient. (gunshot wound in my leg)

I filed my claim for Diabetes Mellitus 4 years ago at age 65, I was awarded 20% plus $100.00 SMC (K1) for ED.

I waited 4 years (age 69) to file for PTSD and Neuropathy.

Started my claim online 22 Apr 2016

After the VSO filed my claim forms 16 Jun 2016, on 1 Sep 2006 I was awarded:

        PTSD 100%

Neuropathy 80% - Secondary to Diabetes Mellitus

        Cataracts 20%

SMC (S-1) $350.00 extra per month because percentage in excess of 160%

Total: $3,518.97 (married extra $162.07 is included)

He was given 90% rating on 2014 but has not received the disability compensation yet. VA gives him a completion date for 2018. Is it adviceable to go to the regional office (Waco TX) to try to find out why the delay or will it make the waiting even longer?

                                              • Hello. I have a question that no one seem to know the answer to. I have a 100% rating with three dependents, two with disabilities, but my orders read permanent/10. When I went to the regional office they told me I was 100% on permanent retired orders but have to be re-evaluated in 5 years. Why do you have to be re-evaluated if you're permanently disable? Also am I eligible to receive SSI, Unemployment? Also the application to send my kids to college, they told me it wasn't in my file because of me returning in 5 years?

                                                  • Avatar

Hi Shavon, that is a good question about the 5 years. I was really curious about that as well, because I am hearing a lot of people say that is happening to them. I think the Veterans need to get a petition going about that 5 year stuff.

                                                        • My guard unit was called to active service on October 8th 2003. I injured my right knee including a slight tare to the MCL, lower back and the nerve that goes from my lower back down my right leg during training for OIF. Being a guard member I was not properly informed of the procedures involved in a medical discharge. So when I was handed my discharge papers on October 10th 2004 and told I was free of all military service and could return home I took it at face value. Several months later while I was in the hospital for an unrelated problem my 1stSgt came looking for me and told my sister that I had went AWAL. When given a copy of my discharge and related medical documents he realized that I was improperly discharge because I was supposed to return to my home unit in my state. Not only that but my discharge date on my DD214 was wrong and in the reason for discharge field it states " Medical Discharge/Not a Disability. When I contacted the military department that handles changes to service records they told me "we have no service or medical records on file for you. They were lost in shipment." So can anyone tell me what if anything I can do to correct all this and get the benefits I'm due. Oh I do have my education and home loan benefits but was told that's all I could get. Help Please!!!

Since then I have favored that leg which over the years has made my lower left back and leg hurt. I had a total knee replacement along with a back operation 3 years ago. Should I file a claim or would that be wasting everbodys time? Note I am on Social Security disability.

I have a 10% rating service connection for Tinnitus both ears and, I suffer from Vertigo and have fallen many times down stairs and level ground. I have been rated by the VA as Housebound and 160% Non-Service Disabled. Non-service connection for Diabetes Mellitus, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Agoraphobia, Hypothyroidism, etc.. I have not done any work in the last 26 years. Yes, I am on SSDI, too. I wanted to apply for IU from the VA but, the VA says no because, I a 100% Disabled from Non-service conditions and only 10% from Service connection. How can someone like me whom can never work again get IU from the VA. As we speak the BVA is considering my Non- Service Connection to be service connection but, I have been waiting now for over 25 years for them to make up their minds in Washington DC. What else can I do to help myself out ? I have a totally disabled helpless child at home, too.

                                                                                                          • Does anyone know if this is even possible? In 1997 (EST 11/28/1997) I was given a 20% Disability Rating while on Active Duty. I was given severance pay and told to file with the VA. I did file with the VA and was award 60%. Some years later I learned that the DOA had made errors in rating soldiers who went before the medical board, so they reevaluated those from 1998-2002 or 2004 I believe. I have been awarded 100% by the VA for a few years now.
Can I make an appeal for the Army to reevaluate my service medical records to see if there was an error?
I personally feel that I should have been retired from the Army. Being run over by 2 trucks- it fractured my pelvis in 8 pieces, fractured right femur, right knee, right ankle, lower back, cracked ribs, bleed out, pronounced "dead on arrival" came back. Other injuries were discovered later after departing the service.
